Free at last

For the first time since 1979, Iranian women are allowed to watch football in the same men’s stadium (under tight security).

For nearly 42 years, the Islamic Republic banned female spectators from attending football and other stadiums, arguing that women were not allowed to enter sports stadiums. This was a violation of human rights.

The change was the result of protests that drew worldwide attention and increased public pressure on FIFA, which, after years of lobbying, prevented Iran from being suspended for the 2022 World Cup.
