Guest Speaker in Batley Camera Club
It was an absolute privilege to be invited by the Batley Camera Club to share my artistic journey and technical research with such a passionate community of photographers. My talk, titled “From Pixels to Silver: A Journey Through Conceptual Narrative and Material Innovation,” was structured into two distinct yet deeply connected sessions.
Session 1: The Digital Narrative & The Art of Staging The first half of the evening focused on my conceptual digital works. I discussed how I use the camera as a tool for “image-making” rather than just “image-taking.” We delved into the philosophy behind my staged compositions, exploring themes of identity, displacement, and the “Shadow of Sin.” It was a wonderful opportunity to explain how personal experiences of migration and language can be transformed into universal visual metaphors through precise digital storytelling.
Session 2: The Alchemy of Liquid Light on Metal After the break, we shifted from the virtual pixel to the tactile world of alternative processes. I shared my deep dive into the “Liquid Light” (Silver Gelatin) technique. The highlight of the night was discussing the “industrial battle” of printing on non-porous surfaces like aluminium and steel. I explained the chemical challenges, the ritual of the darkroom, and why I believe the materiality of a photograph is essential in our digital age.
A Night of Connection What made the night truly special was the engagement during the Q&A. We discussed the bridge between scientific rigour and emotional depth, and I was thrilled to show some of my physical prints on metal, allowing the audience to feel the texture and “weight” of the images.
A huge thank you to Batley Camera Club for the warm welcome and for fostering such a vital space for photographic discourse. The journey from the laboratory to the gallery continues!
